I found out Opal had been rushed to the hospital a few days before.  I went to the hospital and was given permission to visit with her in the intensive care unit.  I continued to stop by the hospital each week for the next 3 months and visit with her as often as I was allowed.

Then one day, I was told that Opal was no longer at the hospital!  I drove to her home expecting to visit with her there.  When I turned onto the street, I noticed a variety of vehicles in the yard of her home.  I parked on the road and walked up to the house, anticipating news.

As I peered into the house, I saw the dark shadowy figures of many people I didn’t recognize.  All surrounding Opal’s husband.  I tried to say “Hi”, but my voice had caught in my throat and it came out a whisper.

I took a breath, found my voice, and asked the room about Opal.  Her husband turned to look at me.  He slowly walked over and said, “Opal has passed on.”  He put a tentative hand lightly on my shoulder and thanked me for brightening Opal’s life this past year with my friendship.  He told me how much she looked forward to my visits.

Looking back to these experiences, I saw what I was looking for.  I found the key to my happiness!  Giving of myself to those who needed and wanted my assistance, this made me happy.  Volunteering makes me happy!

As soon as I realized this, I immediately started volunteering.  I give of myself anytime that I can, as much as I can, to help others in need.  I feel selfish at times, because of how much joy I personally receive from volunteer work.  Yet I can also see the happiness in the faces of others.  Volunteering is a win/win!

I may have lost my happiness, but I have gone back to the last place I remembered having it and I found it.  Now, this time, today, is the happiest time of my life!

If you have lost your happiness, or if you know someone who has, remember to look where you last remember having it.  There will be a root cause which you can bring back to your life.  Find your happiness and bring it back.  Seek Positive! 🙂
