Superfood Smoothie – Green Goodness

This is one of my favorite smoothie creations to date.  Here’s how much of each ingredient I use and some quick health benefits of each.

  • Kale – 3 to 4 leaves, depending on size. If the stems are particularly hardy, then I will remove them.
    • Fiber / Iron / Vitamins A, C, K / Antioxidants / Omega-3 / Calcium
  • Apple – 1 whole Granny Smith apple.  Chop it up into large chunks for easier blending.
    • Antioxidants / Vitamin C / Fiber / Potassium
  • Lemon – 1 whole lemon.  Score the lemon vertically all the way around the circumference.  Slide your finger under the rind at the top or bottom of one side and gently pull back.  Keep adjusting and loosening the rind until the entire skin comes off one side.  Repeat for the other.  Drop the whole lemon in, or pull it into smaller chunks if necessary.
    • High Vitamin C / Potassium / Magnesium / Copper
    • Note: Foods with Vitamin C help your body absorb the iron that your body needs from foods like the Kale listed above!
  • Honey – 2 Tablespoons or to taste.  I prefer my smoothie to be more on the tart side.  I recommend using local honey whenever possible.
    • Antibacterial / Antifungal / Antioxidant / It’s really just AMAZING!
    • Note: Don’t overdo it on the honey though.  Moderation is important, especially if you are diabetic.
  • Chia Seeds – 2 Tablespoons (approx.)
    • Fiber / Omega-3 / Hydrating / Easy to Digest
    • May help with: Weight Loss / Diabetes
  • Maca Powder – Start with 1/4 teaspoon and work up to 1 teaspoon.
    • Energy Booster / Stress Reliever / Hormone Balancer / B-Complex Vitamins / Calcium / Zinc / Iron / Fiber / 7 Essential Amino Acids
  • Spirulina Powder – Start with 1 teaspoon and work up to 1 Tablespoon.
    • 16 grams of digestible protien per serving! / ALL 9 Essential Amino Acids / Antioxidant (4x blueberries!) / Vitamin K / Manesium / Potassium / Thiamin / Riboflavin / Niacin / Iron / Copper / Manganese
  • Chlorella Powder – 1 Tablespoon
    • Chlorophyll / Protein / Amino Acids / Iron / Calcium / Magnesium / Potassium / Vitamins A, B12, C, E
  • Wheatgrass Powder – 1 Tablespoon
    • Chlorophyll / Beta-Carotene / Vitamin C / Protein / Amino Acids / Fiber / Iron / Folic Acid
  • Water – Use water to the fill line of your blender cup.
